10 Tough Interview Questions – And How to Ace Them (Without Spinning Your Wheels)

Job interviews can feel like a high-pressure MOT – every answer checked, tested, and taken for a spin. But with the right prep, you’ll be ready to pass with flying colours. Whether you’re applying as a Technician, a Centre Manager, or anything in between, it pays to know what’s under the bonnet.

Here are 10 tough interview questions, tailored with a few industry twists – and tips to help you nail them!

1. Tell me about yourself and your previous roles.

Your intro shouldn’t be full of hot air. It's an opportunity to deliver a concise, compelling summary of your career, highlighting experiences and attributes relevant to the role. Keep it slick and share:

  • Who you are professionally

  • What makes you roadworthy for this role

  • Recent job highlights (last 10 years max)

Steer your answer toward what ATS Euromaster is looking for – safety, service, teamwork, and getting customers back on the road. End by asking an insightful question that sparks a conversation and demonstrating your engagement.

2. Why are you leaving your current role?

Don’t throw your old job under the bus.

👉 Tip: Focus on moving forward – like a vehicle in good alignment. Maybe you're looking for more traction in your career or want to join a business that goes the extra mile for its people and customers. Frame your answer around growth, new challenges, or a desire for different experiences that align with the potential role at ATS Euromaster. It's about looking forward, not backward with negativity.

3. What’s your greatest professional achievement?

This one can put you in the fast lane.

👉 Tip: Tell a quick story that’s got torque – what you tackled, how you did it, and what the results were. Whether it’s hitting centre targets or turning a tricky customer situation around, keep it punchy and polished. Make sure the achievement is significant and demonstrates qualities valuable, like problem-solving, teamwork, or initiative.

4. What qualifies you for this job?

Now’s the time to put your best tread forward.

👉 Tip: Pick 2-3 strengths. Think about a core technical skill, a relevant management or organisational skill (like planning or staffing), and a personal success attribute that makes you an ideal candidate. Show you've got the right tools for the job!

5. Have you ever achieved something you didn’t think you could?

They want to know you don’t skid when the road gets rough.

👉 Tip: Think of a time you exceeded expectations – maybe you completed a complex job on a tight turnaround or stepped into a new role and smashed it. This demonstrates that you're not easily deterred, can "get going when the going gets tough," and shows you’ve got drive.

6. How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines?

Working in our industry can be full throttle – especially in peak seasons.

👉 Tip: Share how you stay calm in the chaos. Do you organise your workload like a well-ordered tyre bay? If you perform well in high-stake situations, provide a concrete example of how you've successfully managed pressure. Show you can diagnose and fix problems even when the clock's ticking!

7. Tell me about a time you took the initiative.

We’re not looking for someone who idles at the lights.

👉 Tip: Talk about a moment when you spotted something that could be better – and did something about it. Maybe you saved time, improved safety, or helped a customer avoid a breakdown. Elaborate on at least one example in-depth, showcasing your effort, strong work ethic, and creative problem-solving. This proves you don't always need to be told what to do – you're already checking under the bonnet!

8. What’s a career mistake you've made – and what did you learn?

We all hit a pothole now and then.

👉 Tip: Be honest. Show how you've learned, improved, and bounced back stronger. The best journeys come with a few bumps – it’s how you steer through them that counts. This shows an open, flexible, and growth-oriented mindset. We all have a few stripped bolts in our past, it's about learning how to prevent them next time!

9. How have you developed over the past few years/Where do you see yourself in the future?

Show you’ve been upgrading your personal toolkit and have an idea of what you want to achieve.

👉 Tip: Talk about how you’ve grown – whether it’s new qualifications, handling customers with more confidence, or becoming the go-to team member in the centre. Be realistic and ambitious, but not overly so. Think about how your career goals align with opportunities at ATS Euromaster. Discuss reasonable career progression – perhaps one or two advancements within that timeframe.

10. Why should we hire you?

Time to tighten the bolts and make your final pitch.

👉 Tip: This is your closing lap. Sum up why you're the right fit, what you bring to the table (or tyre balancer), and how you’ll go the extra mile for ATS Euromaster’s customers and colleagues. Being yourself is key to really make yourself shine in the headlights and show your true potential.

Just like balancing a wheel, nailing an interview is about being confident, clear, and well-prepared. Preparing for these tough questions will not only boost your confidence but also allow you to present yourself as a thoughtful, capable, and desirable candidate. So polish up your answers, roll into that interview with pride – and remember, at ATS Euromaster, we’re always looking for people who keep things rolling, even when the pressure's on.
